The Townsend Guild Academy is a consortium of independent tutors in Port Townsend offering courses in Core Subjects and the Humanities to home-schooled students and those in other educational programmes, including the public schools, for grades eight through twelve.

Though we of course aspire to teach and instruct, yet as well within this aspiration our chief pedagogical belief is that all academic subjects are what Socrates called ‘maieutic’, that is, ‘midwives of thought’ – in other words, avenues along which students arrive at and develop their own critical thinking, capacity for dialectic and reasoning, sound and objective open-minded enquiry, rigorous discussion, and an over-all independence of thought. We therefore wholly ascribe to the verb to educate in its true etymological meaning: ex/e-, ‘out from’ + ducere, ‘to lead forth’. Thus, to bring forth or to bring out from within an individual that which already exists (anamnesis), and withal to foster, cultivate, and usher such onward in a manner that respects students’ own minds, hearts, and souls as opposed to force-feeding them an over-profusion of facts and data with the expectation of regurgitating such on multiple choice ‘tests’ and thereafter forgetting them. Our tutors have a personal enduring passion for the subjects they teach, and thereby a natural ardent enthusiasm that we trust will elicit the same in our students.
